Shonen Jump magazine has revealed some plot details for the upcoming Wii and Wii U exclusive JRPG Dragon Quest X. According to the magazine, the game begins in the small village of Etene and tells the story of two siblings who loose their parents at a young age. Players assume the role of one of the siblings and create two brothers, two sisters, or one of each.

It was also revealed that while players will start the game as a human, they will — at some point in the game — be transformed and join a non-human tribe. Dragon Quest X is currently set for release sometime next year.

The Wii “Family Edition” value pack will include a copy of Wii Sports and Wii Party, the console itself is slightly sleeker and lies horizontally while in use.

The console also has a different configuration, the downside being the console will no longer be able to support any GameCube games or accessories.

This doesn’t come as a surprise with Nintendo sales coming down, however dropping support for GameCube games doesn’t make much sense except lowering the price slightly. Neither does the name, wasn’t the original idea behind the Wii to be a family console?

For the past few months speculation regarding the new generation of consoles has been at an all time high. With claims of new hardware to be announced within the next twelve months – that will lead this generation to a close – and into a whole new exciting era entirely.

Without a doubt it’s a bit early to jump the gun and say there’s nothing big left in the tank. But it got us thinking about how much this generation has pushed the limits of the industry and launching gaming into the fastest growing entertainment median – and with that, a collaborative entry about some of our hand chosen special memories this generation has provided.

Your best Gaming Memory of this Generation – What would you pick?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Andy – Routine Gears of War Multiplayer

In 2006, it become routine to come home at the end of the day, turn on the Xbox360 and join the guys for a session of Gears of War multiplayer. It was the first game on the console that kept me coming back time after time – it wasn’t just the story, it was the overall experience. Some of my fondest memories online were spend with friends on Gears of War. The mad rush at the start of the match to get possession of the power weapons. The way you learnt other players movements. That quad kill with a sticky frag grenade. Never have I felt to mad at a game, but so satisfied moments later. It was a hard game to get in to the groove – but once you did, it was fantastic.

Gears of War 2 has all the necessary ingredients to be an even better all around package compared to the first – but somehow it felt a little off. Perhaps it was the lag, or even the weapon changes. Or maybe we just got too attached to those classic maps in the original. While it was still a fun game, the spark the original had wasn’t as prominent.

It was 5 years since I felt that spark again – but on April 18th 2011, upon receiving a press beta pass for Gears of War 3 Beta, I felt it. Roll on September 20th.

__________________________________________________________

Sean – The World of Warcraft Investment

My most treasured modern day gaming memory stem from a game that I hold with some prestige. World of Warcraft was my first major investment (in both time and money) in a MMORPG. Logging in and creating my first character from a selection of familiar races and lore (I was a big Warcraft fan before the days of WoW) was a fulfilling experience and set the mood perfectly. Walking around familiar locations and talking to familiar characters within the game was something that instantly appealed to me, it’s an odd experience seeing all the environments from a new more detailed perspective. The best part of WoW (back then anyway) was the social aspect of the game. I started the game with a few friends I knew from school so I began the game within a very small community as it was.

As I invested more time in the various fun and engaging activates within the game the feeling of community vibe intensified and soon people who knew each other only through game were freely chatting on Ventrlio like they’d known each other for years. The game core quality was undeniable with high quality content such as dungeons and quests but the games quality was improved tenfold when experienced within a strong community. While I loved the game’s content its the community I remember. The banter in guild chat, the chat on Ventrlio and the mixture of a group of people from all walks of life coming together to enjoy a game we all loved, this is my fondest modern video game memory.

I had a little bit of a hard time thinking of this one, but honestly I think my favourite memory would have to be playing Street Fighter IV online for the first time… then being beaten almost instantly.

Of course not for that reason, though. I have been a big fighting game fan, especially a Street Fighter fan since the early days. So when I heard about Street Fighter IV I flipped, it was enough reason to pay for XBL membership. I remember as soon as I got it, I immediately put the disc in and started an online lobby. The feeling of competing against somebody across the world filled me with memories of playing its predecessors with friends for hours on end.

Needless to say I bought Super Street Fight IV and enjoyed every moment of it.

Jorey – Gears of War Leading in to the Next Generation

Picking my favourite gaming memory from this generation is probably one of the easiest choices I’ve ever had to make. Sure, there’s several memories that I look back at fondly; the launch of Street Fighter IV in particular was the catalyst of a long foray of sleepless nights that lasted long after the sun had already set and risen, but there’s one memory so simple that stands high and tall above everything else: the launch of Gears of War.

I’m not even anything remotely close to a crazed Gears of War fan, but its launch clearly stands out to me for one specific reason: It was the first game that truly felt like the next generation was finally here. The jaw-dropping visuals, the fear-inspiring Kryll, the chilling atmosphere and soundtrack – it was unlike anything I had ever played, but the thing that I remember the most fondly was the unique bond shared with my friends while playing Gears of War co-op. I’m not just talking about regular old Xbox Live headset co-op, I’m talking about two or more friends sitting in the same room with a big HDTV taking turns playing a game that just absolutely blew our minds. While the memory of having a group of friends huddled around the TV shouting out enemy locations, yelling for assistance, and cheering for joy may be one of my earliest memories of this generation, it’s also the one that’s resonated with me the most.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Brad - Achievement Unlocked

My best moment of current generation gaming is a hard choice. I’ve had many good moments, from being in a top 3 world ranked guild in World of Warcraft, to the Gears of War 2 days, to, well, lots of other moments.

But one stands out above all for me, and it happened whilst I was playing Aliens vs Predator on the 360. I decided I was going for the full 1000g on it, as not many had done it because it was too hard. There was my challenge. I did all the hard parts, the nightmare campaigns, max rank online, and it left me one online achievment left – The Uninfected. The premise was simple – be the last to survive in an 8 man mode (with the other 7 hunting you as Aliens), and last 30 seconds. It was harder than sounds – if people didnt make it near the end, they quit. And that voided my achievement. Then one day, I got it, with about 2 seconds to spare. I could see 3 Aliens running at me, and I was doomed. Luckily, the timer went and my achievement popped. I actually danced around my living room for joy.

And ever since then, achievements give me far more joy than they used too – now I go for all of them.

The National Gamers Surveys, conducted by New Zoo this year, reveals that more than a half of U.K, France and German adults are gamers, with the highest ratio of gamers in Europe being in the UK.

Overall, the United Kingdom has the highest ratio of gamers, with 68% of men and 59% of women playing games. In Germany, 63% of men and 54% of women play games. In France, 61% of men and 52% of women play games. But while there are more gamers that spend more in total in the United Kingdom and Germany, it’s the French that spend the most money per player, spending an average of £22.3 per month, which is more than the United States, where players spend an average £17.5 each month. The United Kingdom spends £18.6 per player each month while Germany spends £13.9/month.

“What these results tell us is that a one size fits all strategy for Europe doesn’t work as there are quite different platform gaming habits, needs and expectations between France, Germany and the UK,” stated Paul Breslin, General Manager of PopCap Europe. “This is clearly a maturing market that has by no means finished evolving. People want to play a range of different games across different platforms. From a publisher’s perspective, this shows the importance of having diversity and multi-platform solutions to reach individual markets in these important regions.”

The study found other interesting facts about gamers in these three countries:

In Europe, the United Kingdom has the highest ratio of gamers, with 68% of men and 59% of women playing games. In Germany, 63% of men and 54% of women play games. In France, 61% of men and 52% of women play games. That’s an estimated total of 153,133,640 gamers in these three regions alone.

In Europe, games are most popular in the age group between 10 and 20-years-old, with 87% of 10 – 20-year-olds in in the U.K., 81% in France and 78% in Germany all playing games.

European gamers split their time evenly between game consoles, casual game sites, social networks, mobile devices, downloadable games and boxed games, with no one platform attracting more than 50% of play time.

Behind the US, which spends £13.2bn per year on gaming, the biggest gaming economy is Germany (£4bn from 24m payers), followed by the United Kingdom (£3.6bn from 16.1m payers), and France (£2.8bn from 10.4m payers).

European gamers spend more money towards gaming on console games than on casual, social or mobile gaming, with German gamers spending 34% of their gaming money (£4bn 2011 estimate) on console games compared to 8% on casual game sites, 4% on social networks and 8% on mobile games.

U.K. gamers spend 44% of their gaming money (£3.6bn) on console games compared to 11% on casual game sites, 6% on social networks and 10% on mobile games.

French gamers also spend 44% of their gaming money (£2.8bn) on console games compared to 10% on casual game sites, 6% on social networks and 10% on mobile games.

While the number one reason to play most games – casual game sites, social networks, gaming consoles, boxed games, and downloaded games – is to relax and unwind, the main reason European gamers play games on mobile devices is because they’re bored.

The Wii-U has already been announced to be backwards compatible with original Wii games, not surprisingly. However unlike the Wii before it, GameCube game disks are not supported, meaning anyone who wanted to play Super Mario Sunshine on their shiny new Wii-U might have been sorely disappointed.

That was until Amber McCollom, director of entertainment for Nintendo of America, spoke up about backwards compatibility on Nintendo systems in a recent interview with Nintendogal.com saying:

“You know it’s interesting that you bring up backwards compatibility and Nintendo’s history usually goes back one system, The Wii was compatible with GameCube and Wii U will be compatible with Wii and that’s pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo.”

“The GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii-U, but a number of the games can be downloaded from WiiWare.”

There was no games listed in the interview, but you can probably expect the Metroid Prime games, Pikmin, possibly Smash Bro’s and maybe even Eternal Darkness? We’ll be sure to keep you posted!

It seems as though Lego games are ever growing in popularity. With their iconic humour, addictive gameplay and reminiscent charm it’s easy to see why. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean takes you on a voyage of discovery through familiar worlds and iconic locations, as you control the various characters that made the films so lovable.

The game spans all four movies across twenty levels, including the most recent in the series, ‘On Stranger Tides’. You are taken through all the major plot points, meeting familiar faces and experiencing reimagined block-built lands. The story is retold using comical cutscenes. They offer laugh-out-loud moments for fans of the series, though if you have never seen the films, don’t expect to understand the story.

The main aim in the levels is to solve puzzles, collect items and defeat enemies so you can progress to the next area. The puzzles range from rebuilding objects, to finding items, and rescuing friends. This is done with the help of over 70 characters, each with different skills and abilities. The most common of all is of course Jack Sparrow, who comes equipped with a compass, used to find hidden items and collectables in each level. Another major character is Will Turner who has the ability to throw axes and hit targets or enemies in hard-to-reach places. Female characters such as Elizabeth Swann are able to double jump, and reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible. Other characters have the ability to fix broken machines, dig up hidden items, pull large objects and open special doors and locks. There are also a wide variety of weapons between characters, including swords, guns, bombs and whips. You can even pick up tridents which can be located around various levels.

Pretty much everything in the environment is destructible, and exploration is highly encouraged. As expected, there is a large amount of collectables to discover and purchase using the studs you gain. These can be collected during the story, but a lot of the hidden secrets require players to return to a level in free-play. Players can also ride a number of animals, including pigs, horses and crabs, which can interact with environmental objects as well. Level design is very clever, and ranges from very linear ships, to free-roam towns. Even when you think you have discovered everywhere in a level, the chances are you haven’t. There a tonnes of hidden nooks and crannies, each hiding collectables. A completionist will have many hours of fun discovering them all.

The game features drop in and out local co-op play, and it can be very entertaining to explore with a friend. Though there is no difference in the levels themselves, it can quicken up collectable and stud gathering. It’s a shame that online co-op, which has been seen in other Lego titles, is not supported.

The game graphics are an improvement from past Lego instalments. Characters and objects look sharp, and the world is vibrant and colourful. The level of detail in the non-Lego materials is stunning. The rainforest, seabed, cavern and beach environments wouldn’t look out of place in a non-Lego game. There are some really great animations too, especially in the fight sequences. The music is taken straight from the movies, and who can argue with that? There are some great tracks which complement the environments perfectly.

Though Lego Pirates provides a very entertaining experience, there are a few flaws that can be incredibly frustrating at times. Firstly, there is an excessive amount of bugs. On at least three occasions I had to restart a level (and one time my Xbox) because a character did not spawn, or an NPC got stuck in the environment. The AI isn’t the smartest either. Sometimes I found that my character would be pushed off a ledge, or blocked from passing by NPC’s. These issues are not huge, just annoying.

On top of this, you may find that some of the puzzles are incredibly frustrating and the solutions very obscure. I often found myself scouting the same area in a level for upwards of twenty minutes just to find one item so I could continue. There is very little direction, and where there is it is usually in obvious places where you don’t need it anyway. Some people may like that challenge, but I’m sure many won’t. It would have been nice to see a hint function built into the game to aid struggling players.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean will be enjoyed by fans of the Lego series. It adds a new setting to the series, but still manages to keep the Lego charm that so many people love. The gameplay is fun to play solo or co-operatively, and collectables will keep you playing for hours.
