BioWare, developers of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, are dipping their toes back in the water, so to speak. A new screenshot has been released in anticipation of the Spike Video Game Awards which is where we will first receive information from the team and the image looks pretty interesting.

The image shows a human male being blown into the air from an exploding vehicle through a collision or explosive weapon of some sort. The image offers no other information to the game but I’m assuming the game will be a first person shooter with a difference. I think.

What’s your opinion?

The demo will be both single player and multiplayer.

Ensuring it’s got it’s claws well and truly hooked into your wallets, your early access can be obtained if you purchase Battlefield 3 on the consoles. PC owners who have the game will be automatically notified when it’s available through Origin. Don’t fret if you find Battlefield is just not your thing, as Bioware have stated there will be another way to gain access, and that will be revealed either in November or December.

Next month’s Xbox World which will go on sale October 25 and it will feature the announcement of a “killer new feature” for Mass Effect 3.

There has been a few hints in the past of what this “killer new feature” could be, most leading to a multiplayer mode.

An example of this was a job listing from BioWare who needed a “multiplayer programmer (Mass Effect franchise)”.

However the subject was taken down after a representitive said “Mass Effect 3 is a single-player game”.

Only time will be able to tell us what this “mystery” feature will be.

BioWare aren’t ruling out the possibility of a Mass Effect MMORPG, it’s just not currently on the agenda.

Co-founder Greg Zeschuk recently spoke to James Brightman of IndustryGamers saying:

“While making it, you learn an enormous amount. It’s one of the nice things about having these properties in our back pocket… If we want to use something we own as a source for a game, it’s easy to do. So yeah, you never know. We’ve got this giant product to launch, but once that’s done we’ll consider next steps.”

Fellow co-owner Mr Ray Muzyka also had his say with:

“We’re focused very much on The Old Republic, Mass Effect 3 and [our free-to-play game] Wrath of Heroes, and all the other things we’ve announced, and haven’t announced, but we also have the opportunity to look at our franchises in a way we haven’t ever before. There are lots of new platforms and lots of new business models.”

According to Zeschuk once ‘The Old Republic’ is finished the studio will be taking a fresh look at the MMO market, watch this space.

Star Wars: The Old Republic may be the ‘biggest online launch ever’ according to project lead James Olden. James spoke with Gamasutra recently saying the developer is working on polishing features like the tutorials and making sure the actual system is stable.

James also spoke on the security behind The Old Republic saying the following;

“The thing about a massively multiplayer game is that it’s different from any other game out there, because you have this vast online community all over the world online at the same time, and you have to make sure there’s no way for your game to be hacked.

“You have to have very strong security, your game has to stand up if you have hundreds of players in one zone at the same time. There’s a lot of things that we’ve never had to worry about at BioWare before.

“We’ve been running a lot of tests, just making sure we’re going to stand up when we launch.”

BioWare are planning for a 2011 release and the game was playable at Eurogamer, so I assume you’ll be hearing about it here very soon.

Mass Effect 3’s 2012 release can’t come quick enough for a lot of people, while others are still sceptical of the third entry into the franchise , and it seems Bioware are more than happy to give its fan base a taste of things to come with the announcement of a Mass Effect 3 demo.

The demo’s existence was confirmed via Bioware staff member Casey Hudson Twitter, he tweeted the following:

“Awesome, much appreciated! Stay tuned for news on demo plans in a few months.”

Details are thin on the ground at the moment with no word on a release or the demo’s content. Keep an eye on the space for further news….and follow @CaseyDHudson on twitter for a cheeky advantage.

I was a big fan of Dragon Age: Origins, the characters felt fleshed out (for the most part) and the main story was engrossing. The side missions felt they were worthy of time and offered a decent experience. Sure the combat (on the consoles) wasn’t top notch an a little fiddly but it was solid never the less and worked, as to was the item management. So Dragon Age 2 should have been a title I would have hugely enjoyed, but it wasn’t. But come on, i’m a Grumpy Gamer.

Dragon Age 2 has become something of a chore for me to play and has dropped down in the pecking order of games I have to finish (even behind Two Worlds 2, a game many assume to suck because it bares the title Two Worlds. Dragon Age 2 isn’t terrible I should make this clear right now however it isn’t Dragon Age. It feels like a new IP in sheep’s clothing, it plays like a new IP in sheep’s clothing and this bothers me. Let’s start off with the characters and the lack of choice I have over them. I can’t play a Dwarf or an Elf (though I didn’t really ever want to a tree hugging tight wearer) nor can I choose my background. I’m stuck with this guy/girl called *insert first name here* Hawke who naturally adopts a posh accent which then destroys any chance of me liking this main character, not because i dislike posh people but more because I prefer to play as the underdog or everyday guy but not this time! I was the posh lad with the sword.

Utterly deflated from the off I decided to try stick it out and play the game as my usual good guy with a cocky attitude (think Han Solo in chain mail) however the posh voice just makes my character sound….well…..silly and out of place. I can’t take him seriously as he stands there with his voice trying to pull off my dam medieval Han Solo but sounding more like Hugh bloody Grant. The character itself feels hollow and a quite lifeless (this is partly due to the poor facial animation featured in Dragon Age 2) and thus makes the story a little less engrossing that the original. The voice acting overall tends to be all over the place ranging from the dam right awful to the high quality you’d expect from a Bioware title. I often embarked on a side quest in which I would encounter a character with a voice so dull and lifeless that I almost thought I was watching Twilight. That being said more often than not the side quests tend to be just as lifeless as the voice’s, gone are the beefy side quests that had plenty of conversation options and lore and instead they are replaced with go here talk to this guy and have a few options which all give the same result in the long run.

It’s frustrating that Dragon Age 2 is so soulless and shallow; it’s not even pretty to look at. Bioware claimed they aimed for a ‘water colour’ art style however the game looks more like a colouring book, I’m also the type to champion gameplay over visual but I’ll get into that later. The game looks like a blur of half arsed textures and washed out plain looking colours (dare I say the game just looks dull?) and at times the game even looks last gen. Sure Dragon Age: Origins didn’t look fantastic but it looked decent at times and on the whole better than Dragon Age 2. The visual look of Dragon Age 2 extends on the characters with faces looking almost template like with little detail, almost toy like.

The gameplay in Dragon Age 2 was something of a surprise to me, at first I hated the almost hack and slash feel to it but it grew on me. It may have grown on me due to the fact that at this point I had accepted that Dragon Age 2 wasn’t the follow up I was hoping for. Some people say the new combat system made them feel more involved with the action (though strangely most of these people didn’t say anything about the lack of sense of involvement in side quests and the hit and miss main story) but to me it felt a little bit too reared towards action rather than any real kind deployment of tactics.

People had the same feelings about Mass Effect 2’s combat compared to Mass Effect 1 , I understand that it was a similar leap found in Dragon Age 1 to 2 however Mass Effect 2 didn’t feel like a chore to play nor did its side missions or characters lack depth or lore (in fact in my opinion Mass Effect 2 is all about the supporting cast rather than Shepard) and thus the combat jump from RPG to 3rd person shooter was acceptable. Dragon Age 2 however just feels flat, flat soulless and so shallow and lacking any real feel of a role playing game. I didn’t bother formally reviewing Dragon Age 2 mainly because that meant I would of had to of played it for long stretches of time which I couldn’t bring myself to do. There are aspects of the game I haven’t talked about in this piece and for the most part they don’t play a huge part in the core experience of the game.

Overall Dragon Age 2 is a title that disappointed me more than any other game this generation; it shouldn’t have been this way as Dragon Age: Origins is one of my most played games on my 360 but alas Dragon Age 2 wasn’t the game I expected or wanted. I stand by my comments that it feels like a new IP with the Dragon Age title slapped on to ensure sales. I’ve become completely confused by some of the reviews of Dragon Age 2 which throw near perfect scores at it and claim it to be one of Biowares strongest titles to date (which is utter lies in my view). If we took away the Dragon Age title would the game receive such positive reviews? I don’t think so. Thankfully Two Worlds 2 (a flawed gem may I add) has given me the RPG elements that where vacant from Dragon Age 2.

Oh and don’t worry guys Dragon Age 2 is also extremely linear for a RPG and offers some of the dullest locations to be seen in a Bioware title.

A demo for Bioware’s Dragon Age 2 will be released on PC on February 23rd if an e-mail sent to Gamestop employees is correct.

Gamestop employees gaining access to the demo is apparently for them to gain key knowledge on the game in order to be a key source of information for Gamestop customers and Bioware fans. This system to our knowledge has never been implemented in Europe.

There’s no information on a demo set for public release as of yet but don’t surprised if it happens around some point before March 8th when the full game is released on Xbo360, Ps3 and PC.

BioWare has announced that one more DLC will be coming out this year for Mass Effect 2. There is no news on what this content will be yet. They also announced that the Cerberus daily news updates will stop on January 24th.

The full statement was as follows:

The Cerberus Daily News will begin a hiatus on January 24th, finishing its run of one full year. Daily postings will cease except for three weeks in 2011: a week of posts will precede a downloadable content release, and two more weeks will lead up to the release of Mass Effect 3.

The CDN team thanks fans for their attention, comments, and feedback, (both in and out of character!). We are sorry to go, but we had fun –- we hope you did, too!
