PSN Introduces "Subscription Model"
Recently at a Sony investor conference, there was a PowerPoint presentation shown which displayed the phrase “new revenue stream from subscription” next to other features of the Playstation Network.
The internet was in turmoil from gamers who were shocked at the possibility of PS3 turning “pay to play.” To address speculations, Sony’s Kaz Hirai has released a statement regarding the change – which doesn’t sound a menacing as once thought.
Whilst speaking with CVG, Hirai stated: “SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network. Especially in the on-line area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”
In summary – online multiplayer will still be free – though possible future features may require a “subscription model” to access.
At this stage no information has been announced regarding the “premium content” – but speculations would suggest early access to demos or advanced privileges. But only time will tell at this point.
